Batteries for Marketplace Sellers and E-Commerce Brands

Marketplace sellers get blocked on batteries for paperwork reasons, not product reasons. A listing needs the right UN number, a safety data sheet or exemption sheet, and for lithium, a UN38.3 test summary. This page sets out what applies and what we supply.

Which UN number applies to the batteries you sell?

Lithium batteries carry one of four UN numbers and the correct one depends on whether the cells travel loose or installed in equipment, and on whether the chemistry is lithium metal or lithium ion. Getting this wrong is a common cause of a refused shipment or a suspended listing.

UN numberWhat it describesExample
UN3090Lithium metal batteries, looseLoose CR2032 cells in a carton
UN3091Lithium metal batteries in or with equipmentCR2032 installed in a sensor
UN3480Lithium ion batteries, looseLoose power tool packs
UN3481Lithium ion batteries in or with equipmentPack fitted in a tool

Alkaline and zinc-carbon cells are not lithium and do not carry these UN numbers. The classification of your shipment still depends on how it is packed — tell us the scenario and we will describe it accurately rather than guessing.

What documentation do marketplaces ask for?

Amazon requires dangerous goods information when a listing is created or converted to FBA, may then request a safety data sheet or an exemption sheet, and requires a UN38.3 test summary for lithium batteries. Not supplying it can hold up a shipment or get inventory blocked.

  • SDS / MSDS — the safety data sheet for the cell, which we can supply.
  • Exemption sheet — used where the product is not fully regulated dangerous goods.
  • UN38.3 test summary — required for lithium batteries; our lithium range holds UN38.3.
  • Battery data — chemistry, watt-hours or lithium content in grams, and the IEC code, which we publish per model.

What are the US packaging rules for button cells?

Button and coin cells sold in the United States have their own packaging requirement. 16 CFR 1263 requires child-resistant packaging, and the CPSC enforces it against the party placing the product on the US market. This sits alongside the transport rules and is separate from them.

  • We supply the cells and their documentation.
  • We print packaging to the design supplied by the brand owner or importer.
  • We record what we produced; we do not claim a packaging certification we do not hold.
  • Full breakdown on our US button battery packaging law page.

What can we supply as your manufacturer?

The documents a listing needs are the documents a factory normally already holds, which is why sourcing direct shortens the paperwork loop. We can supply the certificate set, the SDS, the UN38.3 summary for the lithium range and a per-model EU declaration reference number.

What the listing needsWhat we provide
Safety data sheetSDS / MSDS on request
Lithium transport fileUN38.3 test summary, lithium range
Manufacturer identityGuangdong TIANQIU Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., Guangdong, China
EU market documentationPer-model EU 2023/1542 declaration number

Can you ship small retail-ready quantities?

Our production is set up for wholesale volumes rather than single-unit fulfilment, so we are the wrong supplier for a seller testing one SKU. Where a seller is scaling a listing and needs a real manufacturer, the first-order minimum is 50 cartons per product line, and the packaging format decides what goes in them.

We do not ship individual retail orders. If you are at the stage of testing a single listing, buy from a distributor for now and come back when you have a volume.

Frequently asked questions

Can you supply the SDS my marketplace is asking for?

Yes, on request. Tell us the exact model and we will send the safety data sheet for it. Where a listing needs an exemption sheet instead, the UN number and the packing scenario decide which one applies.

Do you provide a UN38.3 test summary?

Yes for the lithium range. UN38.3 is one of the certifications we hold and it is the document carriers and marketplaces ask for first on lithium cells and packs.

Is a CR2032 a dangerous good?

Lithium metal cells are regulated for transport and carry a UN number, which is why UN38.3 applies. Whether your specific shipment is fully regulated depends on the packing scenario — loose cells and cells installed in equipment are treated differently.

Can you put our brand on the cell and the packaging for a marketplace listing?

Yes — that is our standard OEM arrangement. We manufacture the cell and print your brand on the cell, the card and the carton, in the packaging format your listing requires.
