Bulova Watch Battery

Bulova Watch Battery Codes

Bulova numbers its cells in its own 2- and 3-digit series (601–628) and those numbers do not match the standard size numbers — a Bulova 317 is an 11.6 × 2.05mm cell, not the 5.8mm cell sold as 317. Bulova also publishes an official model/caliber battery lookup. We supply the correct watch battery factory direct, with custom label & bulk for watch brands.

Bulova's own battery codes — what standard cell does each one map to?

Bulova is the one watch brand here that publishes an official battery lookup — enter your watch's model or caliber number on Bulova's support site and it returns the battery, the voltage and whether it is rechargeable. What that lookup does not give you is the older two- and three-digit Bulova code that is printed on some cells. That mapping is in the table below, so you can go either way.

Source: Maxell Micro Battery Cross Reference and Replacement Guide (BULOVA column) · Energizer's Bulova watch battery finder (code list) · Bulova's own support documentation. Read this before you buy — Bulova's numbering is its own series and at least one code collides with a standard size number while meaning a completely different cell. Bulova 317 maps to an 11.6 × 2.05mm cell (381 / SR1120SW) in Maxell's chart, whereas the cell sold simply as 317 is 5.8 × 1.65mm (SR516SW) — and that smaller cell carries Bulova code 616. Buying by the printed code alone, without checking the diameter, can put the wrong cell in the holder. Match the code in the table above, and confirm the diameter against your old cell; better still, look your watch's model or caliber up in Bulova's own finder. Rows marked single source appear in one manufacturer's chart only.

What does Bulova say about replacing the battery?

Before the practical steps, it is worth knowing what the watchmaker itself advises. These points are quoted from Bulova's own support documentation, so you can weigh them against doing the job yourself.

  • Bulova publishes an official lookup: enter the watch's Model or Caliber (movement) number and it returns the battery, the nominal voltage and whether the cell is rechargeable.
  • For most Bulova models the cell named is a 1.55V silver-oxide cell, given under its standard name rather than a Bulova code — we saw SR916SW, SR927W, SR626SW, SR621SW and SR521SW across the models listed.
  • Not every Bulova watch is silver oxide: Bulova's own table lists model 98D156 (caliber NM50-YYT) as taking a CR2016 — a 3V lithium cell. Confirm the exact cell for your model in Bulova's lookup rather than assuming a chemistry.
  • Several models share one caliber (for example 96B107, 96B104 and 97B100 all use caliber 9U13-00V and the same SR916SW cell), so the caliber number is the field worth searching on if you cannot find the model.

How-To

How to Replace a Bulova Watch Battery

  1. Open the watch case back with a watch-back tool or flat screwdriver
  2. Note the battery size and which side faces up
  3. Remove the old 377 cell with non-metallic tweezers
  4. Insert a fresh 377 battery with the correct polarity
  5. Re-seal the case and set the time
Match the exact size and voltage. A wrong-thickness cell can jam the case back or power the watch incorrectly.
Size Guide

How do I find the right watch battery size?

A watch cell is identified by diameter and thickness together — the IEC type number encodes both. Read the marking on your old cell and match it below; if the marking has worn away, measure the cell and pick the row that matches. These are the silver-oxide watch cells we manufacture.

ModelVoltageDiameterThicknessCapacityAlso marked

Fit is decided by size and voltage, not by brand — that is why the same cell carries several trade numbers (377 = SR626SW = AG4 = SG4). Match on diameter and thickness and the cell will seat correctly.
FAQ

What do buyers ask about Bulova watch batteries?

What battery does a Bulova watch use?
Bulova does not publish a public movement-to-battery lookup that we could verify, so we will not state which cell a particular Bulova model takes. What is documented is Bulova's own code for the cell: read that code off the old cell or the caseback and match it in the table on this page — the code maps onto a standard silver-oxide cell.
How do I replace a Bulova watch battery?
Pry the case back open with a watch-back tool, note the battery polarity, remove the old cell with non-metallic tweezers, insert the new battery (correct side up) and re-seal the case.
Is the 377 battery rechargeable?
No — the standard 377 is a primary (non-rechargeable) Silver Oxide cell. Replace it rather than recharge.
How do I check which watch battery size I need?
Read the code on the old cell first — Bulova prints its own code on the cell (228, 260, 226, 242, …) and that code maps onto a standard cell in the table on this page. If the print has worn off, measure the old cell: diameter and thickness together identify the model.
What do the numbers on a watch battery mean?
The IEC type number encodes the size, not the brand. In SR626SW the code gives a 6.8mm diameter and 2.6mm thickness at 1.55V. Trade numbers point at the same cell — 377 = SR626SW = SR626 = 376 — so any of those markings is a direct replacement for the other.
Does it matter which watch battery brand I buy?
Fit is set by the model number, not the brand: any cell matching the size and voltage fits the holder. What does vary is the capacity and the consistency of the discharge curve, which is why we publish 24mAh for the cell we supply and can send the discharge data with a quote.
