AA and AAA are the two cells most people handle every week, and they are easy to confuse on a shelf: same shape, same 1.5 V label, same brand artwork. The differences that matter are length and how much energy the cell holds.
What actually differs between AA and AAA?

| AA (LR6) | AAA (LR03) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 50 mm | 44.5 mm |
| Diameter | 14.5 mm | 10.5 mm |
| Nominal voltage | 1.5 V | 1.5 V |
| Typical alkaline capacity | 2,000–3,000 mAh | 1,000–1,200 mAh |
| Where it is used | High-drain devices | Compact devices |
Typical alkaline figures. Exact capacity depends on the discharge rate and the cut-off voltage of the device.
The voltage is identical, so a device never cares how many volts it gets. What it cares about is how long the cell keeps delivering them at the current the device draws.
Is capacity the real difference?
An AA holds roughly two to three times the energy of a AAA in the same chemistry. That is why the same toy, in two sizes, runs visibly longer on AA cells.
Two consequences follow:
- In a high-drain device (motorised toys, flashlights, portable radios) the extra capacity of an AA shows up as runtime you can feel. AAA versions of those products drain fast and get replaced often.
- In a low-drain device (clocks, remotes, thermometers, scales) both sizes last for months, and the smaller AAA is usually the better mechanical choice — it takes less space and less material for a job that does not need the energy.
Can you swap an AA for an AAA?
The diameters differ by about 4 mm, and the lengths by 5.5 mm. An AA will not enter a AAA bay, and a AAA dropped into an AA bay will not touch both contacts reliably — it may work on the bench and fail in a customer’s hand.
Adapters exist, but they only make sense for a single demonstration, never for a product you ship.
Which one should you specify?
| Device draws | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Motors, lamps, speakers | AA | Runtime matters more than size |
| Clocks, remotes, sensors | AAA | Small, light, months of life either way |
| Unknown | Match the original | The bay and the contacts were designed for one size |
What does this mean for OEM and wholesale buyers?
Both sizes are produced on the same lines and can be printed, blister-carded and boxed for your brand — single pack, 2-pack, 4-pack or bulk. What we need to quote it is the exact model (LR6 / LR03 or the carbon version), the packaging format and the annual quantity.
