Holder Compatibility

Will a CR2025 or CR2016 fit a ASUS CR2032 holder?

All three cells share the same 20 mm diameter and the same 3V nominal voltage — only the thickness changes. A holder is a fixed height, so a cell that is too thin can sit loose and make intermittent contact.

CellDiameterThicknessCapacitySame 20 mm seat
CR203220mm3.2mm190mAh ~ 255mAhYes — 3.2 mm, the standard seat height
CR202520mm2.5mm130mAh ~ 185mAhSame 20 mm diameter, but only 2.5mm thick — check the holder height
CR201620mm1.6mm75mAh ~ 100mAhSame 20 mm diameter, but only 1.6mm thick — check the holder height

Every cell above is 20 mm across, so the diameter does not tell them apart — the CR2025 is 0.7 mm thinner than the CR2032, and the CR2016 is thinner again. Because the seat is a fixed height, a thinner cell may not be gripped firmly and contact can be unreliable. Match the cell to the seat your board actually has: read the marking on the old cell and the silkscreen beside the holder, then confirm the size before ordering.

How-To

How to Replace a ASUS CMOS Battery

  1. Turn off the PC and unplug the mains power
  2. Ground yourself, then open the case to reach the motherboard
  3. Locate the coin-cell CMOS battery near the chipset or battery slot
  4. Release the metal clip and remove the old CR2032 cell
  5. Insert a fresh CR2032 with the + side up and re-seat the clip
  6. Boot the PC and reset the date and time in the BIOS
Laptop models may keep the CMOS cell on a short connector instead of a clip holder — unplug it gently and reseat the new cell.

Which CMOS battery does my PC brand use?

Every brand on this list takes the same cell: a CR2032. The part number does not change — only where the holder sits and how you get to it. So if you service a mixed fleet, one box of CR2032 covers all of them; what you need per model is the access route below.

FAQ

What do buyers ask about ASUS CMOS batteries?

What battery does a ASUS motherboard use?
Most ASUS desktops and laptops use a CR2032 3V lithium coin cell (20mm, 3.2mm).
How do I replace the CMOS battery on a ASUS PC?
Power off and unplug the PC, ground yourself, open the case, locate the coin-cell holder, release the clip, remove the old CR2032, insert a fresh cell, then boot and reset the BIOS clock.
Why does my ASUS PC reset the time?
A dead CMOS battery makes the clock reset and BIOS settings drop on boot. Replacing the CR2032 cell fixes it.
How do I know if my ASUS board takes a CR2032 or a thinner cell?
Read the marking on the cell you are removing and the silkscreen on the board beside the holder. Almost every ASUS desktop board takes a CR2032 — a 20 × 3.2 mm, 3V primary lithium coin cell in a metal clip or plastic socket. Thin laptop and small-form-factor boards can take a CR2025, which shares the 20 mm diameter but is 0.7 mm thinner, and a CR2032 will not fit that holder. Confirm the size before ordering.
Where is the CMOS battery on an ASUS motherboard?
On an ASUS desktop board it sits in a coin-cell holder near the chipset or the battery slot, usually labelled CR2032. On an ASUS laptop it is usually under the bottom cover or in a small service compartment, and most laptops run the RTC battery on a two-wire lead rather than a clip holder.
My ASUS laptop CMOS battery is on a cable — what do I buy?
Buy the complete wired pack, not a loose coin cell. On most ASUS laptops the RTC battery is a coin cell heat-shrunk in plastic with a two-wire lead and a small plug; the board has no holder for a bare cell, so a loose CR2032 cannot be substituted. Match the plug and lead length to the original before ordering.
Which ASUS BIOS settings should I record before replacing the CMOS battery?
Write down the current date and time and anything you changed in BIOS/UEFI — boot order, XMP/DOCP memory profile and Secure Boot state. Shut the PC down normally, disconnect the mains lead (and the laptop charger on a notebook), leave it without external power for ten minutes or more, then boot straight into BIOS setup and compare. If the clock has drifted or your settings are gone, the standby cell is the cause and should be replaced.
My ASUS board is marked ML2032 — can I fit a CR2032?
No, never. The two cells are the same 20 × 3.2 mm size and both are 3V, but an ML2032 is rechargeable and the board is wired to trickle-charge it, while a CR2032 is a primary cell that must not be charged. Maxell states in the ML2032 datasheet that fitting a primary battery in a charging circuit can generate gas, short-circuit the cell internally and lead to leakage, overheating, explosion or fire. If the board holds an ML2032, fit an ML2032.
