Holder Compatibility

Will a CR2025 or CR2016 fit a HP CR2032 holder?

All three cells share the same 20 mm diameter and the same 3V nominal voltage — only the thickness changes. A holder is a fixed height, so a cell that is too thin can sit loose and make intermittent contact.

CellDiameterThicknessCapacitySame 20 mm seat
CR203220mm3.2mm190mAh ~ 255mAhYes — 3.2 mm, the standard seat height
CR202520mm2.5mm130mAh ~ 185mAhSame 20 mm diameter, but only 2.5mm thick — check the holder height
CR201620mm1.6mm75mAh ~ 100mAhSame 20 mm diameter, but only 1.6mm thick — check the holder height

Every cell above is 20 mm across, so the diameter does not tell them apart — the CR2025 is 0.7 mm thinner than the CR2032, and the CR2016 is thinner again. Because the seat is a fixed height, a thinner cell may not be gripped firmly and contact can be unreliable. Match the cell to the seat your board actually has: read the marking on the old cell and the silkscreen beside the holder, then confirm the size before ordering.

How-To

How to Replace a HP CMOS Battery

  1. Turn off the PC and unplug the mains power
  2. Ground yourself, then open the case to reach the motherboard
  3. Locate the coin-cell CMOS battery near the chipset or battery slot
  4. Release the metal clip and remove the old CR2032 cell
  5. Insert a fresh CR2032 with the + side up and re-seat the clip
  6. Boot the PC and reset the date and time in the BIOS
Laptop models may keep the CMOS cell on a short connector instead of a clip holder — unplug it gently and reseat the new cell.

Which CMOS battery does my PC brand use?

Every brand on this list takes the same cell: a CR2032. The part number does not change — only where the holder sits and how you get to it. So if you service a mixed fleet, one box of CR2032 covers all of them; what you need per model is the access route below.

FAQ

What do buyers ask about HP CMOS batteries?

What battery does a HP motherboard use?
Most HP desktops and laptops use a CR2032 3V lithium coin cell (20mm, 3.2mm).
How do I replace the CMOS battery on a HP PC?
Power off and unplug the PC, ground yourself, open the case, locate the coin-cell holder, release the clip, remove the old CR2032, insert a fresh cell, then boot and reset the BIOS clock.
Why does my HP PC reset the time?
A dead CMOS battery makes the clock reset and BIOS settings drop on boot. Replacing the CR2032 cell fixes it.
Which CMOS battery does an HP motherboard use?
An HP desktop board takes a CR2032 — a 20 × 3.2 mm, 3V primary lithium coin cell in a metal clip or plastic socket. Thin laptop and small-form-factor HP boards can take a CR2025 instead: same 20 mm diameter, 0.7 mm thinner, and a CR2032 will not fit that holder. Read the marking on the old cell before ordering.
Does my HP laptop use the same CMOS battery as an HP desktop?
The cell is the same CR2032, but the form differs. HP desktops carry it in a clip or socket on the board, while most HP laptops run the RTC battery on a two-wire lead — a coin cell heat-shrunk in plastic with a small plug. A bare coin cell cannot be substituted for the wired pack, so order the complete pack and match the plug and lead length to the original.
Why does my HP PC ask for the date and time on every boot?
That is the classic flat-cell symptom: the RTC lost its standby supply, so the clock resets to a default date and the BIOS settings drop. On an HP machine it usually shows as a 'CMOS checksum error' or 'CMOS Time and Date Not Set' message at boot. Replacing the CR2032 cell restores the clock and the settings.
How do I test the CMOS battery on an HP PC before replacing it?
Note the date, time and your BIOS settings, then shut the PC down and disconnect the mains lead (and the laptop charger on a notebook). Leave it without external power for ten minutes or more, boot straight into BIOS and compare. If the clock has reset or your settings are gone, the cell is the cause. Measured with a meter, 3.0–3.3 V is healthy and below 2.5 V means replace — but a cell can read a healthy open-circuit voltage and still fail under the RTC load, so the power-cut test is the reliable one.
My HP board is marked ML2032 — can I fit a CR2032?
No, never. The two cells are the same 20 × 3.2 mm size and both are 3V, but an ML2032 is rechargeable and the board is wired to trickle-charge it, while a CR2032 is a primary cell that must not be charged. Maxell states in the ML2032 datasheet that fitting a primary battery in a charging circuit can generate gas, short-circuit the cell internally and lead to leakage, overheating, explosion or fire. If the board holds an ML2032, fit an ML2032.
