A key fob that stops responding is almost never broken — it is a 3 V coin cell at the end of its life. Changing it takes a couple of minutes if you know where the seam is and which cell to buy.
What cell does your fob take?

Pull the old cell out and read it, or look up the brand below. Most remote keys use one of three cells, and the model number is printed on the cell itself.
| Brand | Common key fob cell | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan | CR2032 | Most Nissan key fobs use a CR2032 button cell. |
| Honda | CR2032 | Most Honda remote keys take a CR2032. |
| Toyota | CR2032 | Most Toyota key fobs use a CR2032 coin cell. |
| Ford | CR2450 | Many Ford fobs use a CR2450; newer models may take CR2032. |
| Mazda | CR2032 | Most Mazda remote keys use a CR2032. |
Cells per brand as recorded on our brand pages. Always confirm against the old cell before ordering — some models within a brand differ.
How do you replace a key fob battery, step by step?
- Identify the cell first. Open the fob before ordering anything. The number on the old cell (CR2032, CR2025, CR2016) is the one to buy.
- Find the seam. Most fobs split along the edge. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, a coin, or the emergency key blade into the slot and twist gently.
- Avoid force and heat. Do not lever on the circuit board, and never use a heat gun or a lighter on the plastic — warped shells stop sealing.
- Note the polarity before removing. Photograph the cell in place. In most fobs the + side faces down into the board, but not always.
- Lift the cell with a plastic tool. A fingernail or plastic tweezers. Avoid shorting the contacts with a metal tool.
- Fit the new cell the same way round and seat it flat in its clip.
- Test before closing. Press the lock and unlock buttons. If nothing happens, the cell is upside down or the shell is not seated.
- Close the shell, check the seam is even, and confirm the fob works from a distance.
What are the two mistakes that cost more than the cell?
- Buying by thickness assumption. A CR2025 forced into a CR2032 clip flattens the contacts, and a CR2016 in a CR2032 holder rattles and loses contact. Match the number on the old cell.
- Touching the new cell with bare fingers. Skin oil on the flat face is not a problem for a coin cell, but bending the clip while pushing it in with a thumb is. Use the clip, not force.
Why does the fob come back to life instantly?
A worn cell still shows close to 3 V on a multimeter with no load. The moment the transmitter draws its pulse, the voltage collapses and the fob does nothing. That is why a fob can be “dead” and the cell still reads fine — a new cell restores full transmit range immediately.
How do you buy key fob cells in bulk?
Key fobs are the single biggest use of CR2032 in consumer electronics. If you supply fobs, garages or retail chains, we produce CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 on our own lines and print, blister-card and box them under your brand.
A fob that still refuses to work after a fresh cell usually has a pairing problem rather than a voltage one. The model-by-model steps live on their own pages: Toyota · Honda · Nissan · Mazda · Ford — and the remaining questions are in the battery FAQ.
